Artist Statement -  Béatrice de Diego

I don’t chase ideas. They find me.

Shapes, color, light, atmosphere and small details are part of my everyday life. I notice them in nature, in everyday moments, in conversations and while traveling. Often it is a brief impression that stays with me and makes me curious.

For me, every work begins long before I enter the studio. Thoughts and images stay with me before I give them form. In the studio, I work intuitively and give the materials space to become part of the process. When something doesn’t feel right, I put it aside until the next step becomes clear.

I see beauty in a wild meadow, in geological formations, in plants, animals, light and color. I’m fascinated by how forms emerge and change. Looking closely shapes my work and continues to bring new ideas.

For me, a work is finished when it also moves something within me. When everything has found its place, I feel a sense of calm. That’s when the work begins to speak for itself, meeting new eyes, thoughts and emotions. To me, that’s where the power of art lies.
